Flax has been consumed for centuries for its good flavour and for its nutritional properties. In recent years, as people have become more aware of dietary health, the global demand for flax in food and beverages, functional foods, and dietary supplements has risen dramatically.
Scientific research has revealed a range of nutritional benefits derived from flax. However, numerous specific benefits are due to its Omega-3 fatty acid, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), lignan and dietary fibre content. Flax also has one of the most nutritious plant protein compositions. The nutrient composition of flax includes a number of important essential minerals and minor amounts of water and fat-soluble vitamins.
Numerous clinical studies have shown the value of flax’s nutritional components. Chronic health conditions, in which scientific support is growing includes cardiovascular and other inflammatory-based diseases, and diabetes. Additional scientific research is underway in Canada and the United States to support the use of flax in the reduction of breast and prostate cancers, in supporting bone health and reducing blood pressure.
While the Canadian public will be a major beneficiary of the FC2015 initiative through enhanced access to flax-based products with significant health benefits, FC2015 is also projected to have an economic impact on Canada as a result of growth of companies, increased exports and job opportunities.
